Continental Bulgarian Wines LLC was founded in 2001 to import fine wines from the Danube River Valley. To purchase products online, visit http://www.bulgarianwinesonline.com HistoryThe tradition
of fine wines continues today at the Vinprom Svishtov winery nestled in the
Danube River Valley of northern Bulgaria. Today’s winery is the successor of a
wine cellar that can trace its history back for centuries. As one drifts down
the grand Danube River one grows fascinated by the undulating landscape of
Bulgaria. Here the southern slopes, with their favorable microclimate and rich
soils are planted with a patchwork of vineyards as they have been for centuries.
In ancient times these lands were inhabited by the Thracians, the first renowned
viticulturists, a fact which Homer alludes to many times in his creative works. Close
to today’s Svishtov one can see the ruins of the ancient town of Novae. During
recent excavation work an ancient winery was unearthed revealing evidence of the
long standing importance of winemaking in this region. Vinprom
Svishtov employs 240 people and produces 3.5 million liters of high quality
Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The products were introduced into the U.S. in
2001 while more than 90% of the winery output is sold to markets in the UK,
Denmark, Norway, Belgium, Russia and Japan. Soil and
climate
conditions in northern Bulgaria are well noted for providing vintages of
exquisite quality. In consonance with a process begun decades ago the winery
maintains strict adherence to high ecological requirements. Through centuries of
grape growing and winemaking, Svishtov continues to fulfill the promise of this
fine land. Grape selection
is
predominately sourced from our vineyard. Recent substantial investment in these
vineyards has resulted in the availability of premium quality grades for our
fine wines. This allows for careful and meticulous adherence to quality and to
exert full control over the complete process by our talented staff of
viticulturists. Fermentation
and bottling proceed under the watchful eyes of wine makers that have been producing
fine wines for centuries. Our impressive winemaking facility allows for the
highest treatment of the grapes. Fermentation and maturation of the wines is
performed by wine makers that are true craftsmen who guide the process with
careful use of barrels, proper oak aging and gentle handling. This attention to
detail allows for the wine makers to express the intrinsic character in the
special wines that they craft at Svishtov. Import and
marketing
is handled by the combination of Danubia Trading Company located in Tallahassee,
Florida and Continental Bulgarian Wines, LLC in LaCrosse, WI. Danubia’s
founder, Jon Berglund, is well versed in the history of the Balkan region and
has an abiding appreciation for the craftsmen that work at Svishtov. Continental
Bulgarian Wines is located in LaCrosse, WI and has interests in business
throughout the Midwest and southwest United States besides doing business in
many countries of the former Soviet Union. Wines1998 Merlot Estate Selection
